2008 Ford F-150 Test Drive Review summaryImage

Though some rivals have more power, the Ford F-150 pickup truck is a true jack-of-all-trades designed with everyday usability in mind.

It may not stir passion like the Ford Mustang, but the F-150 pickup is an icon all the same. It is one of the best-selling vehicles of all time and called upon for duties ranging from worksite workhorse and grocery-getter to road trip long-hauler and soccer-practice shuttle.

The Ford F-150 is in the final year of its eleventh generation. Trims run from spartan to luxurious. The F-150’s largest rivals include the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, and, to a lesser extent, the Dodge Ram 1500.

9/10

There is a dizzying array of configurations for the F-150, factoring in different bed, cab, drivetrain, and trim combinations. These include single cab, SuperCab (an extended cab), and SuperCrew (a full four-door crew cab), as well as Ford F-150 XL, Ford F-150 SXT, Ford F-150 XLT, Ford F-150 FX4, and Ford F-150 Lariat trims in Canada. There are also special editions, including the King Ranch, Lariat Limited, and Harley-Davidson editions, each with their own unique exterior and interior colour and material combinations.

What sets the F-150 apart from its rivals is its cabin. Even in the base trim, it is comfortable, quiet, and well-designed. Upgraded trims will have far more comfortable appointments, but the layout of the truck ensures a good cabin experience across all trims.

Standard features include 17-inch steel wheels, a tilt steering wheel, intermittent wipers, crank windows, and a locking tailgate. There are a host of new options for 2008, including a factory-installed cargo-management system, towing mirrors, and a backup camera. Leather seats, power windows, heated mirrors with auto-dimming on the driver’s side, automatic climate control, and a power sunroof are also available on higher trims.
