2020 Audi Q7 Test Drive Review summaryImage

We take the refreshed 2020 Audi Q7 on a 1,600-kilometre family road trip to see whether changes and updates keep this SUV competitive.

From its styling and interior to its powertrain and technology, the 2020 Audi Q7 gets a thorough update that brings it in line with other high-end cars and SUVs wearing four chrome rings on their grilles. Simultaneously, the changes for the 2020 model year keep this Audi competitive against the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, its primary rivals in the midsize luxury SUV class. We packed a Q7 Technik full of family and luggage and set off to assess this Audi’s improvements on the open road.

8/10

Multiple variations of the 2020 Audi Q7 are available. The 45 TFSI designation applies to versions of the SUV equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, while Q7s with a mild-hybrid turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 carry 55 TFSI nomenclature. New for 2020, a performance-tuned and sporty Audi SQ7 is also available, equipped with a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8.

For this evaluation, we examined the Q7 55 TFSI, which starts at pricing of $75,000 Canadian including MSRP plus a $2,550 delivery charge. Q7 models include Komfort, Progressiv, and Technik trim levels, and the test vehicle had the Technik upgrade, bringing the total price to $86,100.

Design changes modify the 2020 Q7’s front and rear styling, and new wheels and lighting elements debut. Mostly, the visual updates improve the Q7’s looks, bringing the SUV in line with themes first seen on the flagship Q8 model. Worth noting, the test vehicle includes standard 21-inch wheels.

Inside, the Q7 is much the same as it was, except it adopts the dashboard and instrumentation from the high-tech Q8. Most physical controls are banished, replaced by three digital displays. Audi’s now-familiar Virtual Cockpit panel provides instrumentation via three different themes, two viewing styles, and a range of configurations. Additionally, two touch-sensing screens reside on the centre console and handle infotainment functions—while serving as magnets for dust and fingerprints.

Decked out in Okapi Brown leather with Gray/Brown Fine Grain Ash natural wood inlays and a no-cost black cloth headliner, the test Q7’s cabin was both upscale and high-tech in appearance. At night, the Technik’s standard multi-colour ambient lighting added a soothing vibe to the ambiance.

In a very short amount of time with this car, it has shown me what a good luxury SUV should and can feel like. Drive is fantastic, interior is no fuss and well put together, outside of the lack of useful "pocket/hidden" storage, it is absolutely a delight to own.Jan 30, 2025

I have owned 3 of the Q7s and enjoy the comfort, driveability, and is great in the snow. Other models are the Lexus, which is boring; Honda Pilot not as luxurious and the Lincoln Navigator which is a tank.Nov 03, 2023
