When you want a Subaru and need more than five-passenger seating capacity, the 2022 Ascent is ready to serve.

Subaru owners are a loyal bunch, and for good reason. The automaker’s cars and SUVs enjoy reputations for durability, safety, and getting you where you need to go regardless of weather and road conditions. But there is only one Subaru made to carry more than five people, and it’s the Ascent midsize three-row SUV. This year, Subaru makes one change to the 2022 Ascent lineup, adding a new Onyx Edition with blacked-out exterior trim and water-resistant upholstery.

6/10

Trends come and trends go, but the one that blacks out all of a vehicle’s shiny exterior trim appears to have staying power. For 2022, the Subaru Ascent now offers this look as part of the new Onyx Edition trim level, which lives smack in the middle of the Ascent lineup.

Ascent buyers can choose between Convenience, Touring, Onyx Edition, Limited, and Premier trim levels. Pricing at the start of the model year ranges from MSRPs of $37,295 to $51,795. Subaru charges a destination fee of $1,875 in Canada, which is not included in these prices.

Our test vehicle for this review was the new-for-2022 Subaru Ascent Onyx Edition. It includes blacked-out exterior trim and badges, black 20-inch aluminum wheels, a unique grille design, and special interior trim. Subaru also wraps the seats in its water-repellant StarTex synthetic leather. You’ll pay $44,995 for the Onyx Edition (plus destination).

You’ll need to make up your own mind about the Ascent Onyx Edition's styling. We’ll grant that the blacked-out treatment gives this SUV a sporty appearance it previously lacked.

Inside, the StarTex upholstery comes only in a gray two-tone scheme with light gray stitching. This is preferable to a black interior, which, unfortunately, is often the only choice when an automaker blacks out the exterior. Metallic trim on the Ascent Onyx Edition’s dashboard and door panels sets an appropriate mood.

While the gray interior colour is nice, we do take issue with StarTex’s tendency to trap sweat against your body. On a hot day, if you get into the Ascent Onyx Edition with damp clothes on, they’re going to remain that way even after hours of travel, and that is simply no good. Ventilated seats seem like a good idea with the StarTex material, but Subaru offers them only on the Ascent Premier.

I absolutely love this car. I previously drove a Crosstrek, which I also loved and hated to part ways with. My growing family left me no choice, but man am I happy with this new ride! I didn’t need all the bells and whistles that the touring offers, but I definitely like them! The ride is smooth, and even though it is a much larger car that my Crosstrek, it doesn’t feel like I’m driving a tank down the road!Nov 26, 2023

Hard to decide between Ascent touring and Volvo XC90….identical and amazing safety features that assist the driver tremendously and both cars will save your life in an accident. For me came down to holding value the Volvo resale valué is terrible with so much money lost. Also cost of service and parts much higher with Volvo. Subaru. Ascent all the safety and luxury and extra room (3rd row seating!!!) but affordability for ownership and purchasing! I bought a 2022 Ascent with just 5000 miles…..saved thousand off off a new car!!Oct 30, 2022

We have never owned a Subaru vehicle before this. We are both extremely satisfied with our choice. It is a very well built auto. We enjoy the ride it is giving us. The safety features are fantastic. Mar 02, 2022
