2024 Volkswagen Golf GTI Reviews, Pricing & Specs

The GTI and its Golf R sibling are sporty versions of the VW Golf compact hatchback, which has been the automaker’s bread and butter in most markets since the demise of the original Beetle. But with the current generation, which launched for the 2022 model year, VW opted to bring only the GTI and Golf R to North America, taking the standard Golf off the table. And while a three-door body style has been offered in the past, the 2024 VW Golf GTI is only available as a five-door hatch.

The styling of the current-generation GTI is a bit more expressive than its predecessor—but not necessarily more handsome. The wide-mouth grille, standard LED headlights that trail off into the front fenders, and a light strip (on Autobahn and Performance models in Canada) above the traditional red GTI grille stripe are all creative touches. But the elements that visually widen the car—both the grille and thin horizontal LED taillights—are placed fairly low on the car, giving it odd proportions when viewed at eye level.

The main design news for the 2024 model year is a 380 special edition package that’s standard on all manual-transmission models. Created to mark the end of the manual GTI, it includes gloss black 19-inch wheels with summer performance tires. As for the 380 name, it comes from the current-gen Golf’s internal model code. The use of a model-code name also nods to the GTI 337 special edition from 2002, which used the model code from the first-generation Golf.

If you don’t opt for the manual transmission, the base Golf GTI and the mid-level Autobahn grade come standard with 18-inch wheels and all-season tires. The top GTI Performance trim level gets machined 19-inch wheels.

The interior blends classic GTI styling touches with the obligatory modern tech features. A digital instrument cluster and large infotainment screen mingle with heavily bolstered (yet well-cushioned) front seats with the GTI’s signature plaid upholstery. The chunky shifter also has golf-ball-like dimples that show an admirable sense of humour, but the steering wheel looks it came straight out of a VW Atlas.

The VW GTI uses VW’s ubiquitous EA888 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, in this case producing 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. In addition to the six-speed manual transmission that’s now on the chopping block, a DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission is also available. In keeping with tradition, the GTI is front-wheel drive (FWD) while its more powerful Volkswagen Golf R sibling has all-wheel drive (AWD).

On the chassis side, the GTI sports a standard electronically controlled limited-slip differential and optional adaptive damping. It’s based on the same MQB architecture as the previous-generation GTI, but with revisions to the body structure for added strength and reduced weight, and to the suspension to enable more precise handling and a more stable feel, according to VW.

Precise and stable is exactly how we’d describe the driving experience. The GTI was always unflustered, smoothing out the rough edges in the driver’s skillset with excess grip and well-tuned suspension. The result is a car that feels more mature than the stereotypical hot hatch. That’s great for a daily driver, as the GTI won’t have you feeling worn out after a long drive. But VW took too much of the excitement away. Even straight-line acceleration is so nondramatic that it’s easy to lose track of just how fast you’re going. Response from the powertrain is totally linear, without a hint of turbo lag.

The flip side is that the GTI is an excellent car for real life. It’s quiet and comfortable, especially if you spec it with adaptive dampers. Those attributes will come in handy when you’re away from entertaining roads, stuck in traffic, or carrying passengers. The GTI may not have as big a personality as, say, a Hyundai Elantra N, but it’s a great compromise between performance and everyday usability.

Similar money will buy you a sports car, such as a Mazda MX-5, Subaru BRZ, or Toyota GR 86, but a GTI brings added practicality thanks to its hatchback body style. The 563 litres of cargo space—or 977 litres with the 60/40 split-folding rear seat lowered—afforded by that body style also beat rival sedans like the Honda Civic Si, Hyundai Elantra N, and Subaru WRX.

When it comes to passenger space, the GTI doesn’t have a clear advantage over the sport compact sedans. The VW has slightly more second-row headroom than these competitors, but less first-row headroom than all but the Civic Si. Front-seat legroom is comparable to the sedans, but rear-seat passengers will feel a bit more squeezed.

Performance may be the priority, but the GTI is no basic economy car. Heated front seats, automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and ambient lighting are standard on all trim levels, and a sunroof is optional from the base trim and standard on the Performance models. Autobahn models add keyless entry. Performance also has standard leather upholstery (but you can keep the cloth as a no-cost option if you prefer), three-zone climate control, ventilated front seats, heated outboard rear seats, and an 8-way power driver’s seat with memory. A large wireless charging pad and cupholders make up for a relatively small centre console storage bin.

However, Autobahn and Performance models also have haptic controls for temperature and audio volume that hinder interior functionality. The lack of physical feedback makes them more difficult to use while driving than analog buttons, and they’re placed right below the touchscreen—right where one might normally lean their wrist while using the screen. We found ourselves awkwardly reaching over the top of the screen to avoid accidentally raising the audio volume.

The haptic controls are a classic example of form over function. They originated in the all-electric VW ID.4, where they at least make some sense in terms of giving the interior a high-tech appearance. But they make no sense here. If anything, as a mass-market car, the ID.4 should adopt an interface like past Golfs, not the other way around.

An 8-inch touchscreen is standard on the base GTI, as are wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless device charging, Bluetooth, a six-speaker audio system, and four USB-C ports (two front, two rear). Autobahn and Performance models have a 10-inch touchscreen with Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a nine-speaker Harman Kardon audio system is added on the Performance trim. This system also adds voice control and SiriusXM with 360L satellite radio. A head-up display is standard on the Performance model as well.

The infotainment system doesn’t set new standards for usability, but it doesn’t have any major pitfalls either. Our only issue was that, when listening to satellite radio, it took a while for the current station and song to pop up on the touchscreen. It appeared in the instrument cluster fairly quickly, but that doesn’t help a front-seat passenger who might want to know the name of a song. If that’s the only issue that stands out, though, we’d say VW has done a good job. And it’s hard not to be impressed by the detailed animations of the car that pop up in the settings menu.

The 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro digital instrument cluster is also standard on all GTI models. It includes four configurations ranging from a fairly standard arrangement of gauges to a full-screen navigation map. The quality of the graphics was excellent, but the design seemed a bit cheesy. The default view—which features a central tachometer with large GTI logo against a honeycomb background—was well-rendered, but looked like it was made by someone not very passionate about graphic design.

And while the big tach is exactly what you want in a performance car, the instrument cluster generally wasn’t very good at conveying information. The default view relegates the fuel gauge to a tiny bar near the bottom of the screen, and it’s even harder to read if you opt for the in-cluster navigation setup. That forces you to rely more on the touchscreen, which isn’t ideal for spirited driving.

Overall, the GTI is an example of an automaker chasing current trends for more and bigger screens rather than considering the specific application. The touchscreen is well executed, but that’s not exactly a priority in a hot hatchback like this. The driver-centric instrument cluster is more important here, and it’s just not as good as it should be.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) hadn’t published a full slate of crash test results for the 2024 GTI at press time, but reported top “Good” scores in the small overlap front test and the original versions of the moderate overlap front and side tests (newer versions have been implemented alongside them). Headlights only received “Acceptable” and “Marginal” ratings, depending on the trim level.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) hadn’t released any safety ratings for the current-generation GTI at press time.

Standard safety features include: forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane keep assist. The Autobahn trim adds adaptive cruise control, which combined with lane keep assist to create Travel Assist. This lets the car maintain speed and lane positioning on highways, but still requires drivers to keep their hands on the wheel.

Like other VW models, the GTI also comes standard with Intelligent Crash Response, which automatically shuts off the fuel pump, unlocks the doors, and switches on the hazards if certain types of collisions occur. Travel Assist-equipped models add Emergency Assist, which can bring the car to a stop if the driver is incapacitated.

In addition to these standard features, park distance control is standard in Canada, and the GTI is available with park assist and automatic high beams.

The GTI remains a fairly frugal choice among performance cars. It’s rated by Natural Resources Canada at 10.1 litres per 100 kilometres in the city, 7.0 on the highway, and 8.7 combined with the manual transmission, or 9.9 L/100 km city, 7.4 highway, and 8.8 combined with the automatic.

Volkswagen includes four years or 80,000 kilometres (whichever comes first) of new-vehicle warranty coverage.

The base MSRP is $37,378 for the base GTI (all prices include a mandatory $1,950 destination charge and other fees). GTI Autobahn models start at $39,487, and Performance models are priced from $43,578. With a standard manual transmission, $495 Kings Red paint, and a $1,250 panoramic sunroof as options, our U.S. equivalent of the Canadian 380 Autobahn was a pretty good spec. Too bad it’s a one-year-only affair.

A mid-range Volkswagen GTI like our test car is also still a relatively good value by the standards of current new car pricing, and it’s in line with other sport compacts like the Hyundai Elantra N and Subaru WRX.

Some questionable design decisions, particularly the interior’s haptic controls, and a staid personality that makes even the muted Subaru WRX GT feel lively hold the GTI back in terms of functionality and desirability. But this is still a well-rounded, practical performance car at an attainable price.
