Reviews Summary

A redesigned 2023 Honda CR-V is on sale, improving on the successful formula the automaker has used for more than 25 years. The 2023 CR-V remains one of the roomiest compact crossover SUVs in its class, and it get an overdue infusion of new infotainment systems and safety features that bring it up to par with its many rivals. In addition, with the 2023 CR-V, the hybrid powertrain is available in Canada for the first time. However, in this review, we’ll focus on the 2023 Honda CR-V EX-L trim with the standard turbocharged four-cylinder engine instead of the Honda CR-V Hybrid.

Reviews Summary

We reviewed the GLC SUV when it was all-new for the 2023 model year and available with only one powertrain. AMG variants have rejoined the GLC 300 for 2024, and the GLC Coupe, which was a carryover last year, now catches up with the redesigned GLC SUV. For the purposes of this review, we’ve focused our attention on the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43, which we spent a week putting through its paces on our home turf.

Verdict: We suspect the AMG-tuned GLC misses the mark on what most shoppers are looking for in a luxury crossover, but for the right driver, it may very well prove worth the wait. For everyone else, the GLC 300 has everything we feel we have a right to hope for from a sub-$60k Mercedes-Benz.

Look and feel

2023 Honda CR-V

7/10

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC

8/10

The 2023 Honda CR-V presented a more refined and slightly aggressive appearance with its blunt nose, grille, and elongated wheelbase. While it lacked the distinct personality of its predecessor, its conservative design was expected to age gracefully. The CR-V EX-L featured 18-inch alloy wheels and dark-tinted rear privacy glass, enhancing its sophisticated look. Inside, the leather-wrapped seats, steering wheel, and shift knob elevated the interior's quality, complemented by a dashboard inspired by the latest Civic, featuring metal mesh trim and a larger touchscreen infotainment system. The CR-V EX-L also boasted a power-adjustable front passenger seat, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a power rear liftgate, adding to its appeal.

In contrast, the 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC maintained a familiar design to avoid alienating its loyal fanbase. The GLC SUV featured new taillights and a revised rear end, while the GLC Coupe retained its steeply sloping profile. The interior was luxurious, with two-tone Sienna Brown and Black leather upholstery and an optional wood-and-metal dash treatment. The GLC was equipped with numerous screens, buttons, ambient lighting, and vents, showcasing Mercedes' commitment to gadgetry. Despite its lower price point within the brand, the GLC's interior was class-leading for those who appreciated a tech-heavy environment.

Performance

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC

The 2023 Honda CR-V was powered by a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine, producing 190 horsepower and 179 lb-ft of torque. While the engine provided ample power for a compact SUV, the continuously variable transmission (CVT) detracted from the driving experience with its droning noise during acceleration. Despite this, the CR-V excelled in ride and handling, with a well-tuned suspension, steering, and brakes. It offered a smooth and engaging drive, handling various road conditions with ease. The CR-V's fuel efficiency was impressive, averaging 8.1 L/100 km on a mountainous route.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC 43 featured a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, delivering 416 horsepower, surpassing the previous generation's V6. The GLC 43's performance was enhanced by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system and a nine-speed AMG Speedshift MCT transmission, offering faster shifts and better torque handling. However, the performance suspension and rougher shifts made it less suitable for daily commuting. The GLC 300, with 255 horsepower, provided a more balanced option for those seeking a luxury crossover with adequate power.

Form and function

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC

7/10

The 2023 Honda CR-V offered a spacious interior, with the second row feeling more generous than the first. The power-adjustable driver's seat and excellent outward visibility contributed to a comfortable driving experience. The CR-V provided ample storage options, including a large bin under the centre armrest and various trays and bins throughout the cabin. The cargo area offered 1,113 litres of space, expandable to 2,166 litres with the rear seats folded down.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC's cabin was driver-focused, with controls angled toward the driver. The front seats offered heat and memory functions, with optional ventilation and heated rear seats. The GLC SUV provided 620 litres of cargo space, expandable to 1,680 litres with the rear seats folded. The GLC Coupe, with its tighter interior, offered 545 litres of cargo volume, expanding to 1,490 litres with the seats folded.

Technology

The 2023 Honda CR-V featured a 7-inch digital instrumentation panel and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, with the EX-L trim offering a larger 9-inch display. The EX-L included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, and an upgraded sound system. While the technology was an improvement over the previous generation, it did not surpass competitors in terms of features.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC boasted an 11.9-inch touchscreen running the third-generation MBUX infotainment system, with a highly responsive voice command system. The GLC included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with optional navigation and a 15-speaker Burmester sound system. Additional features included an off-road dash display, head-up display, and augmented reality navigation.

Safety

The 2023 Honda CR-V improved its driver assist systems with the Honda Sensing suite, including adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and lane-keeping assist. New features included a seatbelt reminder system and traffic sign recognition. The CR-V received a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS, though the NHTSA had not yet tested it.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC also earned a Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS, with an "Acceptable" rating for its standard front crash-prevention system. Standard safety features included active brake assist, attention assist, and Pre-Safe, which prepared the vehicle for an imminent collision. Optional advanced driver-assistance systems were available for an additional cost.
