The Honda Prelude lacks a historic signature design motif that anchors other iconic vehicles to their past, allowing its designers to essentially tear down styling barriers to create a completely new identity. Its split headlights make it unique in the Honda lineup; comparisons to the current Toyota Prius seem inevitable, though it can be argued they have stylistic ties to the Ferrari SF90 that predates both. Origins aside, they're all distinctive and attractive, while the new Prelude also sneaks a wedge-like nose element into its thin grille that reminds us of the Honda S2000.

If you blur your vision, the 2026 Prelude's tail could be mistaken for a Porsche 911 or Taycan thanks to its single red light bar, rounded haunches, and black lower fascia. The raised Honda lettering and Prelude script further contribute to the comparisons, but these similarities stop well short of seeming derivative.

Ties to Honda's contemporary design are much more prevalent inside. The steering wheel, mesh grille vents, and climate controls look similar to the entry-level Civic, and the push-button gear selector is the same one found in larger Honda SUVs. The synthetic suede trim lends the cabin a more upmarket and racier feel that we'd sooner expect from a Civic Type R or an Acura Integra, while the inviting two-tone blue and white interior shown here furthers the sense of occasion, though it's only available with the Winter Frost white paint colour in Canada.

The rear seats, however, are decidedly downmarket with a rather coarse black fabric upholstery surrounded by hard plastics. Considering the lack of space back there, we're inclined to think most owners would choose to keep the seatbacks folded to allow for more cargo capacity, using them for passengers only when needed.

While the 2026 Honda Prelude doesn't have any obvious heritage styling ties to its nearly 50-year history, it exudes a very similar personality. It's sporty but not overly extroverted. The bodywork is pleasantly clean and devoid of extraneous aerodynamic bits thanks to smart underbody engineering to control airflow. It's also classy without being boring and turns heads wherever it goes. We expect its appealing design will hold up very well over time once the novelty wears off.

The 2026 Honda Prelude borrows its powertrain from the Civic Hybrid, though unique tuning and a lighter overall weight give it a very different personality. Said powertrain is made up of a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine mated to two electric motors. Combined output is 200 horsepower and 232 pound-feet of torque. Unlike most hybrids, the gas engine operates primarily as a generator, although it can power the wheels through a fixed-ratio clutch. This setup capitalizes on the gas engine's peak efficiency on the highway and the efficiency of the electric components at lower speeds.

From the driver's seat, this complicated system initially feels like a traditional hybrid with the gas engine springing to life shortly after initial acceleration. With more aggressive stomps of the pedal, the gas engine activation is immediate. In its default start-up mode, the continuously variable transmission (CVT) makes itself known as it lacks the gear shifts associated with traditional automatic transmissions.

The S+ button by the gear selector activates S+ Shift mode, which simulates eight gear ratios for a sportier experience. We realize it likely degrades efficiency slightly and perhaps even makes acceleration slower, but the mechanical illusion is well worth the sacrifice. It allows you to manually "shift" via steering wheel-mounted metal paddles, and when motoring along, it essentially erases the hybrid character and makes it feel like the Prelude just has a slightly more potent conventional gas engine. With S+ deactivated, those paddles control the amount of brake regeneration when decelerating. At its highest setting, the Prelude scrubs speed like an EV, though it will not bring the car to a complete stop.

For more engaging handling, the new Prelude pulls suspension components from the Civic Type R parts bin, including adaptive dampers. They've been detuned for improved comfort, and together they find an optimal balance between performance and compliance that seems very appropriate for a modern Prelude. Our test vehicle came with summer tires that helped the Prelude corner with confidence, though we suspect most drivers will find the standard all-season tires more than adequate.

In Sport mode, the dampers don't firm up to any objectionable level, and the Prelude remains composed over mid-corner bumps. In Comfort mode, the softened ride is very subtle. The differences in drive modes are more noticeable in the synthetic engine sounds and different throttle response rates. The 2026 Prelude isn't a sports car. Instead, it's a sporty coupe that’s uniquely inspiring for a variety of drivers in different ways.

Like the rest of the Prelude, its front seats look the part of a sports car, but they're more comfortable than expected. The side bolsters aren't aggressive enough to intrude on your ribs or thighs, yet they're deep enough to keep you well anchored when cornering. The cockpit itself has an appropriately snug feel, and the thick steering wheel rim reinforces the sporty theme.

We're glad the designers opted for physical climate controls instead of integrating them into the infotainment touchscreen, which makes for less distracting adjustments while driving. We'd prefer the traditional gear shift lever found in the Honda Civic, the Accord, and the CR-V, though, as the push-button selector is comparably unintuitive and might actually take up more space. Even drivers very familiar with the button selector may occasionally tap the wrong button or select between them too quickly. A lever would give more positive feedback and allow for quicker three-point turns.

The rear seats are comically small and restrictive. Headroom would only be adequate for child-sized passengers, and their knees may still push into the front seatbacks. Roasting under the rear hatch could also be rather unpleasant on sunny days. It's best to think of the Prelude not as a four-seater but as a two-seat coupe with rear jump seats available in a pinch.

This new Prelude is the first hatchback in the model’s history, which greatly improves its versatility and utility. Behind the rear seatbacks, the cargo area can hold up to 427 litres. That's a volume more often associated with midsize sedans than sporty coupes. Stowing the rear seats makes room for much bulkier items, even though the seat backs don't fold flat with the floor. However, the liftover height over the bumper is tall and will require more effort to load heavier cargo. The cargo floor can be folded to create a partition to better secure loose items, and a pair of hooks should keep your shopping bags from emptying their contents.

For smaller personal items, the front seating area provides adequate but not generous storage. A standard wireless charging pad ensures a spot for your smartphone. Other storage areas include decently sized cupholders, smallish door pockets, and a centre armrest bin.

The standard 9-inch infotainment touchscreen is appropriate for a relatively small coupe. On the other hand, the 10.2-inch digital instrument panel seems too small for the binnacle in which it's placed. The plastic frame around the display is the main culprit, making it feel as though there should be a larger screen option, but none is offered. It's one of the few areas where it feels as though Honda cut corners on the Prelude. To the automaker’s credit, the graphics are easy to read and there's no lack of information.

The infotainment system runs on the Google built-in platform, adding compatibility with your personal Google profile to integrate with your existing maps, apps, and entertainment. It also allows for enhanced voice controls, activated by saying "Hey Google," followed by natural speech commands to input a destination or adjust the climate.

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard and pair well with the wireless charging pad. The problem is the charging pad isn't particularly grippy, and we found it finicky when trying to position our phone just right to make the connection.

Overall, the infotainment system works well and is reasonably intuitive. Physical home and back buttons are welcome shortcuts, and we’re thankful for the volume knob, too. On the left margin of the infotainment screen, you can also customize shortcuts to your favourite features. Reactions to commands are quick.

Crash test results were not available from either the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) at the time of writing. Standard safety features are comprehensive and include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, a blind spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking proximity sensors, traffic jam assist, a traffic sign reader, and automatic high beams. Post-collision braking is also included and helps to prevent secondary impacts in the event of an accident.

For the most part, all systems we were able to try functioned as they should, though the lane departure and frontal collision warnings seemed slightly oversensitive. We noticed a warning flash in the instrument panel along with a beep, but the systems did not overreact by activating the brakes or intervening with the steering. In our experience, this is a common occurrence with Hondas, but these features have improved over time.

Prices for the all-new 2026 Honda Prelude start at $52,061 (including the $1,830 destination charge and other fees). It has a long list of standard features and very few options. The Crystal Black paint costs an additional $400, while Winter Frost (white) costs $600.

Several coupes can be considered direct competitors to the Prelude, especially at that luxury-adjacent price point. The Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR86 clones start at more than $15,000 less, but lean more on the performance side and much less on comfort and refinement. A four-cylinder Ford Mustang starts from about $10,000 less and retains much of its muscle car heritage, but it's quite a bit larger. The Mazda MX-5 is about as fun as cars get on any budget and its interior is on a par with the Prelude's, but it comes up well short in terms of practicality. On the luxury side, the BMW 2 Series Coupe represents an understated equivalent, while the coupe-like Audi A3 sedan has very similar sensibilities.

Compared to these alternatives, the Honda Prelude dominates when it comes to efficiency. Fuel economy estimates for this sporty hybrid land at 5.4 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving (5 city, 5.7 highway) and it doesn't require premium fuel. By comparison, the BMW 2 Series is estimated at 8.4 L/100 km combined and the GR86 is rated at 9.7 L/100 km.
