Reviews Summary

Chevy sells a 2026 Silverado 1500 to meet almost any need, and it’s one of the only trucks in its class with a diesel engine option (the other one is the similar GMC Sierra 1500). The in-cab technology in most trim levels is also impressive. Otherwise, the Silverado falls short in key areas, including performance, fuel economy, safety, and towing technology. That said, the value equation is compelling enough to overcome these flaws—for now.

Verdict: Chevrolet needs to go back to the drawing board to design and engineer a competitive full-size pickup truck. Keep the Duramax, the Google Built-in infotainment system, the CornerStep bumpers, and the Super Cruise option. Ditch everything else because brand loyalty can’t support sales forever and time is running out.

Reviews Summary

The Ford Maverick really shook up the pickup-truck market when it arrived as a 2022 model. Ford’s compact pickup utilizes the same basic platform as the Escape and Bronco Sport crossovers, but it offers real truck capability and a hybrid powertrain to boot. The 2025 model features styling and tech updates, but the biggest news is a Maverick Lobo performance variant and an all-wheel drive (AWD) hybrid, so that’s what we focused on for this first drive.

Verdict: The Maverick is still a great vehicle, but it’s not quite the bargain it once was.

Look and feel

2026 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

9/10

2025 Ford Maverick

7/10

The 2025 Ford Maverick presented a fresh yet familiar design, maintaining its chunky styling and large wheel arches reminiscent of larger Ford trucks. The removal of the cross bar from the headlights gave it a more conventional look, opening up the grille with various designs depending on the trim level. The Maverick offered several trims, including the base XL, XLT, and Lariat, along with specialty models like the Tremor and Lobo. The Tremor was an off-road model with dedicated suspension tuning and all-terrain tires, while the Lobo paid tribute to the street truck trend with a cleaner front fascia and lowered suspension. The Maverick's interior was praised for its fun design and high-quality feel, even with basic materials, offering multicolour trim and exposed screwheads for a unique aesthetic.

The 2026 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 lineup was vast, offering regular, extended, and crew cab styles with various cargo-bed lengths. It featured a range of powertrains, including turbocharged four-cylinder, turbocharged diesel six-cylinder, and two V8 engines, with nine trim levels available. The Silverado RST 4WD, tested with a crew cab and short bed, had a basic yet livable interior with modern technology and decent-quality materials. The front bench seat provided six-passenger seating, and the transmission shifter was a nostalgic lever on the steering column. However, it blocked access to the stereo volume knob when in Drive. The Silverado's interior design was more sophisticated than the average pickup, with metallic accents adding visual contrast.

Performance

9/10

2025 Ford Maverick

4/10

The 2025 Ford Maverick offered two powertrain options, with the standard hybrid now available in FWD or AWD, while the non-hybrid was AWD-only. The hybrid used a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, producing 191 horsepower and 155 pound-feet of torque. The optional 2.0-litre EcoBoost turbocharged engine delivered 238 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, except for the Lobo, which used a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The Lobo's lowered suspension and upgraded cooling system emphasized handling, making it unique among pickups. The Maverick hybrid offered a passenger-car-like ride, with the turbo-four providing more power for those seeking an upgrade.

The 2026 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, equipped with the TurboMax turbo-four powertrain, boasted 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. The 2.7-litre engine was paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and an Autotrac 4WD system. Despite its power, the TurboMax engine lacked a pleasant sound and mid-range punch for passing. The Silverado's towing capacity was capped at 4,080 kilograms with the TurboMax, while the Duramax diesel offered up to 5,900 kilograms. The RST handled daily driving duties competently but was uninspiring to drive, with slow steering and a suspension that struggled over bumps. Brake overheating was a concern during mountain driving, highlighting potential issues for towing heavy loads.

Form and function

2025 Ford Maverick

6/10

The 2025 Ford Maverick had a base towing capacity of 907 kilograms, upgradable to 1,814 kilograms with the 4K Towing Package, except for the Lobo and Tremor. The Maverick's 4.5-foot bed featured cargo dividers and a 110-volt outlet, with the tailgate serving as a tie-down brace for larger items. Inside, Ford maximized space with intricately molded in-door cubbies and mounting points for 3D-printed accessories. The Maverick's unibody platform provided similar headroom and legroom to the larger Ford Ranger, with heated front seats and a heated steering wheel standard on the Lariat trim.

The 2026 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 RST featured a 40/20/40 bench seat, allowing for six-passenger seating. The RST's cloth upholstery and heated front seats provided comfort, though the seat felt hard after extended use. The Silverado offered ample room for taller passengers, with rear-seat legroom and thigh support. The front centre seat backrest folded down to create a storage console, and the truck had various storage options, including a deep dash-top tray and under-seat storage. The RST's EZ Lower and Lift tailgate, CornerStep bumpers, and optional spray-in bedliner made it ready for cargo.

Technology

2025 Ford Maverick

8/10

The 2025 Ford Maverick upgraded to the Sync 4 infotainment system with a 13.2-inch touchscreen, offering wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The tech was straightforward, though the reliance on touchscreen sliders for temperature and seat heaters was less convenient. The Maverick Lariat included Pro Trailer Hitch Assist and Pro Trailer Backup Assist for easier towing.

The 2026 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 featured two interior options, with the RST boasting a modern dashboard and impressive technology. A 12.3-inch digital display and 13.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Google Built-in provided a seamless experience. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were supported, and the Silverado offered a towing package with Hitch View and Hitch Guidance technology.

Safety

2026 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

6/10

2025 Ford Maverick

3/10

The 2025 Ford Maverick offered standard forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams, with optional blind-spot monitoring and lane-keep assist. The NHTSA gave it a four-star overall safety rating, while the IIHS ratings were mixed, with a "Good" side crash test rating but "Marginal" and "Acceptable" ratings in other areas.

The 2026 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 came with Chevy's Safety Assist package, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane departure warning. However, it lacked blind-spot monitors and adaptive cruise control. The NHTSA had not released crash-test ratings, while the IIHS ratings were subpar, with "Marginal" and "Poor" ratings in frontal impact tests.
