Reviews Summary

No longer the exclusive truck-only brand for General Motors now that Buick has gone all-in on SUVs, GMC nevertheless holds a unique position in the automaker's product portfolio. Offering a lineup of "Professional Grade" trucks and SUVs with premium features, enhanced capabilities, and unique exterior and interior designs, GMC toes the line between Chevrolet and Cadillac.

All-new for the 2021 model year, the Yukon full-size SUV gets a standard 12-inch driver information centre and enhanced connectivity for 2022, among other changes. The 2022 GMC Yukon is available in four trim levels: SLE, SLT, AT4, and Denali.

Reviews Summary

Thanks to the rise of car-based crossovers, today’s SUVs with body-on-frame construction appeal to buyers with specific use-cases in mind: towing and driving off-road. Luxury SUVs like the 2023 Lexus GX appeal to an even narrower cross-section of buyers: those who want to tow or drive off-road and do in style and comfort. With a V8 engine as its trump card, the GX remains compelling amid its small pool of competition, but due to a combination of age and a lack of innovation, Lexus’s only real off-road SUV has fallen out of favour for anyone not enamoured by a V8 growl.

Look and feel

2022 GMC Yukon

8/10

2023 Lexus GX

7/10

The 2022 GMC Yukon was a chrome lover's dream, with even the base SLE model featuring enough shiny elements to give it a premium appearance. As you moved up to the Denali trim, the chrome became even more pronounced, with the front end almost entirely constructed of it. The Denali's grille, reminiscent of an industrial-sized cheese grater, gave the vehicle a unique and commanding presence. The Yukon also offered a spacious and tastefully crafted interior, with standard seating for eight and options for second-row captain's chairs. The Denali trim boasted exclusive interior designs, adding layers of texture and a premium look.

In contrast, the 2023 Lexus GX had a distinctive visual presence with its massive spindle grille and high ground clearance. The GX Black Line Special Edition returned with limited units and exclusive paint colours. Despite its luxury badge, the GX's design leaned towards a sleeker aesthetic compared to Toyota's blocky designs. Inside, the GX had a disappointing amount of plastic, but it still offered luxury touches like heated and cooled front seats and impressive leather upholstery. The interior space was practical, though the third row was tight for regular use.

Performance

2022 GMC Yukon

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2022 GMC Yukon offered a choice of three engines, including a 5.3-litre V8 with 355 horsepower and a 6.2-litre V8 with 420 horsepower. A 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine was also available, providing 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. All engines were paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The Yukon excelled in towing capacity, with a maximum of 3,810 kilograms when properly equipped. The independent rear suspension improved handling and ride quality, although some bouncing was noted over rough surfaces.

The 2023 Lexus GX featured a 4.6-litre V8 engine producing 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. While not the most powerful on paper, the V8 provided a satisfying driving experience. The GX had a towing capacity of 2,948 kilograms, but its fuel economy was less impressive. The vehicle's weight contributed to a rolling sensation in corners, though it remained predictable and controllable. The GX's 4WD system and Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System enhanced its off-road capabilities.

Form and function

2022 GMC Yukon

8/10

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2022 GMC Yukon offered ample space, especially in the third row, thanks to a redesign that increased legroom significantly. Cargo space was also generous, with 722 litres behind the third row. The power-folding second-row seats and power-sliding centre console added convenience. The pushbutton transmission controls were a modern touch, though they required some acclimation.

The 2023 Lexus GX provided practical storage solutions, with a deep centre console bin and conveniently placed cupholders. The second row was comfortable, but the third row was tight for regular use. The side-hinged trunk door required effort to open, and cargo space was limited to 328 litres behind the rear seats. Folding the seats increased capacity to 1,832 litres, still less than some competitors.

Technology

2022 GMC Yukon

8/10

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2022 GMC Yukon featured a 12-inch reconfigurable driver information centre and a 15-inch head-up display. The 10.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system included Google Built-In, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The Bose 14-speaker audio system was adequate, and the rear-seat media system offered entertainment options.

The 2023 Lexus GX had a 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Lexus Remote Touch Interface was present but unnecessary due to the improved touchscreen. The 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio system provided quality sound. However, the tech felt dated compared to newer Lexus models, and the graphics were less crisp.

Safety

2022 GMC Yukon

8/10

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2022 GMC Yukon came with GMC's Pro Safety suite, including automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and more. It received a four-star overall rating from NHTSA. The Safety Alert Seat and rear camera mirror enhanced safety.

The 2023 Lexus GX included the Lexus Safety System+ with features like automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control. Despite its older design, the GX was equipped with modern safety technology, though it lacked some advanced features.
